CEO Update: Pricing Volatility

As New Zealand’s largest reseller of technology hardware, PB Tech pays strong attention to global market trends. As many of our customers will have noticed in recent months, pricing on products containing memory, chips, hard drives, and related components has increased significantly. These rises are being driven by worldwide shortages, and at this stage there is no clear end in sight.

We are reaching out to make you aware that this level of price volatility is likely to continue and also increase further for some time yet. Many of our leading vendors, who historically held pricing steady for months, are now only able to hold prices for weeks, and in some cases just days. This reduced window of price stability reflects rapidly changing component costs, which fluctuate based on availability and the specific components vendors are able to secure. The situation appears to be deteriorating further and we are also seeing some vendors repricing current bid pricing which is still active, but where no purchase order has been placed.

We encourage customers to stay informed and factor this environment into their purchasing decisions. For those already planning infrastructure investments, moving sooner rather than later is increasingly proving to be the most effective way to manage costs.

In my 30+ years of experience in the local technology industry, this is among the highest levels of pricing volatility I have seen. It is something well worth being aware of.

I trust this information is helpful and assists with your planning.
